Gulmarg is a town in Jammu and Kashmir. The town is nestled within the Himalayan peaks. It receives heavy snowfall and so is a popular ski resort.
In spring Gulmarg really lives up to its name the Meadow of Flowers. In winter, it is a ski resort.
It is famous for the Gulmarg Gondola one of the highest cable cars in the world. As it is not very well known compared to other international skiing resorts, skiers don’t have to wait in long queues and get to go on untracked snow. Government is trying to develop it for beginner skiers also.
Gulmarg also boasts of the world’s highest golf course.
In summer it is popular for trekking, mountain biking, water skiing and fishing.
It is very close to the border and there is a huge presence of army, though it is not very intrusive.
Gulmarg used to be known by the name of 'Gaurimarg' was a resort for Jahangir. Its name was changed to Gulmarg by Yousuf Shah Chak. Gulmarg was a favorite summer retreat for the British.
Srinagar, the gateway to Gulmarg is located just 57 km away and is well connected by air to major Indian cities and also by bus with neighboring cities.
