Corbett is situated in Uttarakhand and is well known for the Corbett National Park. It was India’s first National Park. It acts as a sheltered area for the critically endangered Bengal tiger of India.
The park is host to a variety of mammals including Bengal tigers, leopards, diverse types of deer and bears, otters, pangolins, langur and rhesus monkeys. The park is also known for birds and aquatic reptiles such as different kinds of crocodiles.
Corbett is very well-liked by visitors and wildlife lovers and in the recent times the number of people visiting has appreciably increased.
The park is named after the famous hunter and conservationist Jim Corbett. It is a popular ecotourism destination and is home to a numerous species of flora and fauna. Even though tourism activities are restricted to select areas of the park, thousands of tourists visit the national park every year. The national park, covering an area of 520 km2, sports a beautiful landscape with grasslands, lakes, hill and riverine. The park is open to visitors only from mid-September to mid-June.
A reserve area was established in 1936 named the Hailey National Park in the site of the current Corbett National Park. It was renamed as Ramganga National Park in 1954 and then renamed again as Corbett National Park in 1955 in honour of the wildlife conservationist Jim Corbett.
Pantanagar is the nearest airport at a distance of 50 km. The nearest railway station is at Ramnagar 60 km away. It is also well connected by road to all nearby cities. Cabs are available from both the places to the national park. New Delhi is the nearest international airport and major city at a distance of 260 km.
Corbett National Park is the oldest national park in India and a very popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts and adventurers. The national park is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna which includes more than 100 species of trees, around 600 species of birds, 50 species of mammals and several species of reptiles. The Corbett Waterfalls is another popular attraction of the park. Even though it is a small waterfall with a height of 60 feet, it provides for a beautiful view and the surrounding area is also popular as a camping site. Elephant rides and Jungle Safari are the main attraction of the park. The river Kosi also provides an excellent opportunity for river rafting.
Corbett Museum which showcases the memorabilia of Jim Corbett is another popular attraction. Corbett Waterfall is another popular spot well known for its view and as a camping site.
