Periyar is a nature reserve in Kerala. It is a highly protected tiger and elephant reserve. Other mammals found here include gaur, Bison, sambar deer, barking deer, mouse deer, Dholes, mongoose, foxes and leopards. There is also a wide variety of birds, butterflies and reptiles.
Sabrimala, a temple visited by 4 million pilgrims every year, is within the buffer zone of Periyar.
It is about 120km from Kochi. It is also known as Thekkady.
Kottayam is the nearest railway station while Madurai is the nearest airport. Bus and taxi services are available from these places.
One of the most famous tiger reserves in India, the Periyar tiger reserve is a popular tourist destination, even though tourists are not allowed in the core area of the park. Periyar Lake situated close to the park is another major attraction.
The Sabarimala Temple in located in the region is visited by thousands of devotees every year.
